Oiart – Alumni – Brian Eimer

A Sound Editor and Mixer for pictures, Brian Eimer won his fourth Motion Picture Sound Editors’ guild Golden Reel Award in 2016 for “Best Sound Editing: Special Venue” for the IMAX film, “Journey to Space,” narrated by Star Trek; The Next Generation’s Patrick Stewart. A graduate of OIART’s recording production program in 1989, his first job after OIART was assistant recording engineer at one of Toronto’s first post production houses, The Master’s Workshop. After that studio went out of business, Brian saw the opportunity to open his own facility, which became ImagesInSound, a 3,300-square-foot post audio facility in downtown Toronto. There, he oversees a staff of three engineers who sound edit and mix audio for shows like Survivor Man, True Stories, Mayday, Psychic Investigators, Property Virgins, and World’s Greenest Homes. One of Brian’s specialties is sound editing and mixing for large format IMAX films such as Journey to Space and Titans of the Ice Age. “The screen is just so big,” he says. “The sound needs to keep up with that and placement is a strong issue. In 3D, the viewers are in the film. The sound needs be to spot on or the illusion will be broken.” Eimer’s advice to anyone looking to get into audio post production? “You need to soak up as much of the experience as you can, because there’s a lot of knowledge out there in the industry. That’s where being around the guys at OIART really pays off. They can teach you skills you can’t get anywhere else.” ...

ImagesInSound Adds Nuage

Buena Park, CA (August 24, 2017)—ImagesInSound, an award-winning audio post-production facility in Toronto, Canada, has installed a 32-fader Yamaha Nuage advanced production DAW system with master section for its largest dubbing stage. Brian Eimer, studio owner, first learned about Nuage through Steinberg. “I was planning an upgrade to Dolby Atmos in my main dubbing stage,” he states. “I had attended an NAB Show in Las Vegas and arranged a Nuage demo there. The system blew me away, and I knew then it would be the right fit.” Nuage system is working out great, says Eimer. “I’ve done two IMAX 12.0 mixes with it, and it was a dream. On the two projects, Extreme Weather and Mysteries of China, I was really able to create an immersive environment with Nuage and Nuendo 7. I just received the Dolby Atmos panner update in Nuendo, and I’m looking forward to working with it.” Nuage replaces a Euphonix System 5 MC, the first sold in Canada. “Nuage has a big advantage over the System 5, the main reason being that it is fully integrated with Nuendo. Euphonix was bought by Avid, and all support was discontinued. But beyond that, Nuage is built for post, with a lot of functionality that is required in post and really easy to navigate.” Eimer has been using Nuendo since N2 and is now using the latest version, Nuendo 8. “Nuendo is the best platform for audio post, and Nuage being part of that platform, made the decision to purchase the system an easy one. The people at Steinberg have always gotten it right, including when they rebuilt the software in Nuendo 5 to make post a main focus.” Eimer adds, “I don’t want to go through menus, and pull downs and continually click to get to what I want to do, like other software. One button on the surface of Nuage and I’m there, or I can just program it; it’s that easy.” Yamaha yamahaproaudio.com...

Sound Design for Special Venue

Images in Sound was founded by Brian Eimer in 2004. InPark Editor Martin Palicki asked Brian about the company’s audio post-production services and his work in the industry. First off, tell us a little about your expertise and what Images in Sound does.  I have over 20 years experience in sound design, designing for all genres of motion pictures, including themed attractions, ridefilms, IMAX films, features and television. I’ve done work for Chimelong, Wanda, Prana, SimexIwerks, and IMAX Ridefilm. I’ve also designed and installed sound environments at Oltramare in Italy, and Camoes in Portugal. "The on site mixing is one of the most important services we offer. Themed attractions almost always have unique speaker configurations. In order for the soundscape or sound design to have the most impact on the visitor, it’s necessary to be on site to make final adjustments.” Images In Sound is a sound design company that handles all the sound design needs of any attraction. We do SFX, music (if required), premixing, and on site mixing. The on site mixing is one of the most important services we offer. Themed attractions almost always have unique speaker configurations. In order for the soundscape or sound design to have the most impact on the visitor, it’s necessary to be on site to make final adjustments. One of your niches is special venue. But you also have done film and TV work. What are the unique elements of working in special venue?  Yes, I’ve done a lot of TV and a few feature films. What makes special venue really unique is that it doesn’t need to conform to standard speaker layouts. Because you’re designing for the speaker configuration you have a lot more creative freedom. I have just upgraded my facility to Dolby Atmos and IMAX 12, so that extended creative freedom is now finding its way into the mainstream, but with 27.1, or 26.2 speaker configurations you can have a lot of fun. You’ve done some work in Asia recently. Tell us about some of your recent international projects  In terms of Asia, I’ve done two projects for Chimlong: Alien Attack in Guangzhou, and Kaka’s Big Adventure...
